POPPY

Australian Shepherd x Border Collie

Female/spayed

DoB:  September 21, 2016

HERDING INSTINCT:  Unknown

ISSUES:  Leash reactivity, territorial guarding & wariness of strangers, unpredictable nipping triggers

Email for Application

When we first assessed Poppy, we didn't think she was going to make it to the adoption pages as she literally nose punched & grabbed the clothing of the assessor, even though she did not approach Poppy directly.  Poppy was not at all interested in getting to know the assessor and her worst behaviour was when her owner was on the other end of the leash.  We suspect it had happened quite often & the owner was very fearful she was going to behave just as she did.

Even after putting her into the truck, she lunged & snapped as the assessor went to get in the truck, after waiting patiently for over 10 minutes for Poppy to voluntarily move out of the driver's seat.  Poppy was given free run of the house, with leash attached, for the first night.  During the night, she snapped at and/or nose punched the foster's legs as they walked through the house in the dark.

Having said all that, once we took off the leash, she has been a sweetheart.  She is affectionate, likes attention & treats & will play with toys.  She has been good in the house & outside with other dogs.  She does not necessarily love every other dog but they are not expected to love everyone as long as they do not go looking for trouble.

We've taken her to the vet, with multiple dogs, & she was the perfect patient.  We've had visitors, both people we know & strangers, come to the acreage & she has not nipped or snapped or lunged at anyone - the reason they were surrendering her.

KNOWN HISTORY:

Poppy was owner surrendered for her unpredictable snapping & nipping, both at strangers visiting their acreage  & people who visit regularly & often (handyman).  Definitely showed some leash aggression when first assessed.
